N Committee recent milestones presented at the June 2022 ACD meeting Internal Workforce Republishing RFA-RM-21-022: Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity at Minority Serving Institutions (U01 Clinical Trial Allowed) in FY 22.Published RFA-MD-21-004 FOA that supports observational research to understand the role of structural racism and discrimination (SRD) in causing and sustaining health disparities, and intervention research that addresses SRD in order to improve minority health or reduce health disparities and up to $30.8 million committed from 25 NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices.Published RFA-RM-21-021 and RFA-RM-21-022 Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) to support transformative research to address health disparities and advance health equity, committing up to $24 million in the first three years and up to $60 million over five years.We need to both understand the basis of disparities and develop effective interventions. Thus, one of the foundational focus areas of NIH UNITE is enhancing health disparities/minority heath/health equity research. The disparities in morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that the NIH needs to accelerate work to address these disparities. Numerous activities have been generated by, or as a result of the work of, the NIH UNITE initiative. We will continue with other efforts to better understand the needs of the community. To that end, we developed the Request for Information (RFI): Inviting Comments and Suggestions to Advance and Strengthen Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Biomedical Research Workforce and Advance Health Disparities and Health Equity Research, which received more than 1,000 responses (closed April 23, 2021). Foundational to these efforts is listening to and understanding the needs of the internal and external biomedical community. Francis Collins publicly committed to stand against structural racism in biomedical research by identifying and correcting NIH policies and practices that may have helped to perpetuate structural racism. UNITE’s four focus areas underwritten by data on this page reflect the three key domains in the Venn diagram.ĭr. The UNITE initiative focuses on three primary domains-health disparities/minority health research (HD/MH), internal NIH workforce, and external biomedical and behavioral research workforce-that intersect and enable greater transparency, accountability, and communications across NIH and the biomedical and behavioral research community. Guided by five committees consisting of staff from across all NIH Institutes and Centers, UNITE is committed to ending racial inequities in the greater scientific community via strategic, short- and long-term actions and funding initiatives that will result in significant, lasting change. On February 26, 2021, the NIH-wide UNITE initiative was established to identify and address structural racism within the biomedical research enterprise, as well as bolster the efforts of the NIH offices involved in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
